Background

The Education Local Expertise Centre Uganda (ELECU) is a national NGO dedicated to empowering Uganda’s most marginalized communities by improving educational outcomes for young people. We work towards sustained poverty reduction by increasing access to quality basic education, skills development, and fostering partnerships with likeminded  organizations, the Government of Uganda, and the private sector.

The Education Local Expertise Centre Uganda (ELECU) in partnership with Save the Children International is implementing a 24 months ECHO RISE Project in Rwamwanja and Kyangwali Refugee Settlements and the host communities. The RISE project aims to achieve increased access, retention and improved learning outcomes for out of school children and children at risk of dropout, including newly arrived refugees, out of school children, unaccompanied and separated children and children at risk, and provide life-saving education services at transit sites.

Position Title: AEP Teaching Assistant (15 positions)

Duty Station: Kamwenge – Rwamwanja

Contract: 12 months, Renewable

Reports to: Lead AEP Teacher

 

Position summary

The Teaching Assistant will directly facilitate general learning processes both in & out of classrooms during learning hours in the primary school that She/He will be posted to, planning together with your colleagues deliver the lessons, carry out continuous assessment of learners and plan for remedial lessons when its required, report to the Head Teacher of the school as your immediate supervisor and participate in any education and community engagement aimed at promoting access to schools organized by the school, ELECU and development partners.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Assisting AEP teachers in instruction according to the learning framework from National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) and strictly adhere to the agreed timetable.
  2. Using differentiated learner-centered teaching methods for easy translation.
  3. Promoting a safe and child friendly learning environment for teaching and learning activities.
  4. Supporting assessment of learners and provision of feedback report in collaboration with teacher and lead teacher.
  5. Maintaining record of learners including attendance and cases of drop out among learners.
  6. Supporting learners’ participation in classroom, extra-curricular and school activities.
  7. Participating in community mobilization and sensitization on regular basis.
  8. General hygiene of the children and centre/school.
  9. Providing psychosocial support to learners in need. Support in developing teaching/learning aids and teaching/learning processes

 

Qualifications

  1. Senior four (4) or Senior six (6) certificate from a recognized institution
  2. Certificate in Primary Education (Grade III) added advantage

Knowledge and Experience

  1. Minimum of 1year similar work experiences in community or school
  2. Good oral skills and ability to speak English and translate to non-English speakers.
  3. Ability to speak the local language commonly spoken by the beneficiaries (Congolese or Kirundi or Kinyarwanda or Kiswahili)
  4. Desirable candidate has mentoring experience.
  5. Very active and creative to support teacher in learning processes
  6. Ability to work harmoniously with teacher and both refugees and host communities.
