Programming Successes

Increasing access to quality basic education

  • Through coaching and mentorship of teachers on participatory teaching methods we support the increase of literacy levels and the continual use by teachers of participatory teaching methods

  • We are promoting management of menstrual hygiene by supporting teachers to cascade training in making re-useable sanitary pads to children. This is helping to keep girls in school.

  • Child-led learning is continually facilitated through school competitions and dramas which built learner confidence and improved their numeracy and literacy abilities

  • In prevention of violence we equip communities and policy and advocacy activities with Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) and Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development (MGLSD), media activities and IEC communication materials development.

Building teacher effectiveness

  • We are empowering teachers with skills in participatory teaching methods and development of age appropriate non book teaching/ learning materials for literacy and numeracy

  • We developed an Effective Participatory Teaching and Learning Manual to guide implementers interested in learning from our best practices

Effective community involvement in promotion of quality basic education

We connected teachers with communities in activities like making of reusable menstrual pads to encourage girl children to stay in school; active engagement of parents in monitoring school performance all of which led to greater ownership of learner outcomes. For example, parents and caregivers are now investing in schools by contributing to infrastructure developments and clearing of unsafe areas as well as planning to mitigate climate-related disasters.

Increased access and quality skills provision

We are increasing youth employment by providing appropriate tools like sewing machines, welding machines, carpentry machines in addition to providing scholarships ELECU is also linking youth enterprises to entrepreneurship training to boost their business management skills.
